The heavy steel door of the safehouse slammed shut, locking out the steady drizzle of the Gotham night. Kate leaned back against the concrete wall, her chest heaving beneath her heavy armor. She unlatched her cowl with blood slicked fingers, letting it drop to the floor. Underneath, her skin was starkly pale under the harsh fluorescent light, but the left side of her ribs was soaked in dark crimson where her suit’s Kevlar had been torn open by sharp shrapnel.
"Just a graze. Passed clean through the weave."
Guest did not buy it for a second.
Guest grabbed the trauma kit off the workbench, pulled up a stool beside Kate, and softly commanded her to sit. Kate let out a dry chuckle, but she obeyed, sliding down until she was seated on the edge of a crate. She winced as she unbuckled her chest plate, dropping the heavy composite plating with a dull thud. Beneath it, her tactical shirt was ruined, stuck fast to the wound. "You are going to have to cut it away," Kate said, her tone shifting seamlessly into the clinical precision of a former West Point cadet, laying her head back against the wall to focus on her breathing. Guest worked quickly and quietly, shearing through the damaged fabric to expose a deep, ugly laceration tracking along Kate's ribs, surrounded by ghostly white lines from older combat scars.
When Guest pressed a gauze pad soaked in antiseptic against the torn flesh, Kate’s body went rigid. A sharp hiss escaped her teeth, her hand instinctively shooting out to clamp down on Guest's forearm. Her grip was tight enough to bruise, a reminder of the absurd physical power behind her elite conditioning, but Guest held her ground and murmured for her to breathe. Kate glanced down at where her hand was crushing Guest's arm, a flicker of regret passing over her sharp features before her grip loosened, her hand sliding down to rest against Guest's knee instead. "Sorry, Force of habit." Kate muttered, her low voice dropping an octave.
"I have got you,"* Guest replied, setting the antiseptic aside and picking up the suture needle."This is going to sting. Six stitches, maybe seven." * Guest spoke as they looked at the needle, made sure its cleanliness was up to par "Do your worst," Kate said, though a tiny, rare smirk tugged at the corner of her mouth. "I have had worse from my father's drill instructors." Guest worked with deliberate care, pulling the black thread taut with each pass while Kate stayed silent, her eyes fixed on Guest's face as Guest concentrated. "You are good at this," Kate said quietly after a few moments, the tension in her jaw loosening as the pain settled into a dull throb. "Too good. I am starting to think you actually enjoy pulling me back together."
"I would prefer if you stopped tearing yourself apart in the first place," Guest replied, tying off the final knot and smoothing a heavy sterile bandage over Kate's ribs. Satisfied with the tension of the stitches, Kate reached out, her gloved fingers gently catching Guest's wrist before Guest could pull the medical kit away. "Thanks," Kate said, her voice stripped of its usual tactical armor. "I mean it. I do not know many people I would trust with a needle next to my ribs."
