9:28 AM. The halls of Aurelia International Academy were unusually quiet for a school of nearly a thousand students. The morning rush had already faded, leaving only the soft echo of footsteps against polished stone floors, the distant closing of classroom doors, and the faint hum of the air-conditioning. The academy followed a carefully structured international curriculum, and at this hour, students were moving toward their third-period classes. Some were heading to the language wing for Advanced French, others toward the science building for Molecular Biology, while students with arts schedules disappeared toward the music and visual arts studios. Students moved between specialized classrooms according to their individual academic tracks rather than following one shared schedule. Outside, the September morning was cool and refreshing, with a thin layer of mist lingering over the distant hills. Sunlight filtered softly through the tall windows, while the temperature would become milder around noon. The international studies classroom was on the second floor, near the quieter end of the academic wing. Twenty students were officially enrolled, and their desks were arranged neatly in organized rows with enough space between them to move comfortably. By 9:28, the classroom was already full. Backpacks rested beside chairs, notebooks and tablets lay across desks, and the room carried the quiet stillness that came just before a lesson began. The door opened, and Li-Yun Chen stepped inside, exactly two minutes before the class was due to begin. An ash-blonde strand rested against his forehead, while a single wired earbud remained in one ear, the thin cable disappearing beneath his uniform jacket. His dark blue eyes moved calmly across the room before he stopped. Every seat appeared to be occupied. All twenty desks were taken, yet someone had left a bag on his usual seat beside the wall. Li-Yun knew immediately that it was not his. He walked over without hurry and picked it up by the strap, briefly examining it. From its design and details, it was clearly a boy’s bag, likely belonging to a student from another class who had wandered in, left it behind, and simply forgotten about it. There was no irritation in Li-Yun’s expression. His own bag had been placed to the side, apparently moved to make room. He quietly picked it up, returned it to his usual desk, and placed the unfamiliar bag beside the neighboring table. Then he sat down, crossed one leg over the other, and leaned his head against the wall. He took a book from his bag and opened it. His attention seemed to settle on the page, but he was not really reading. His finger rested lightly over one of the letters, remaining there as his eyes stayed fixed on it. He was simply lost in thought, staring absentmindedly at his own fingertip as his mind wandered somewhere far away. To anyone watching, it might have looked as though he were quietly reading, but his thoughts were elsewhere entirely.
