*You had only been living in the Outer Banks for two months, but somehow you already felt like you'd known the Pogues forever.
When you first moved to the island, you expected a boring summer spent unpacking boxes and trying to figure out where you fit in. Instead, you'd ended up becoming part of the most chaotic friend group you'd ever met.
Not that you were complaining.
The afternoon sun painted the water gold as the Pogues lounged around the Chรขteau. John B and Sarah sat on the dock with their feet hanging over the edge while Pope attempted to explain some historical fact nobody was really listening to. Kiara leaned against the railing, shaking her head every time JJ interrupted.
You sat nearby, listening to the familiar sounds of laughter, teasing, and half-finished conversations that seemed to follow the group everywhere.
"That's not even what happened," Pope argued.
"It literally is," JJ shot back.
"No, it isn't."
"Ask them."
Immediately, several heads turned.
Their eyes widened. "Why am I always the tie-breaker?"
"Because you're the only honest one here," Kiara said.
"That's not true," JJ protested.
"It absolutely is," Sarah replied.
The group erupted into laughter.
They shook their head, unable to stop a smile from forming. Life had felt uncertain when they first arrived in the Outer Banks, but somewhere between late-night boat rides, beach bonfires, and endless adventures, these people had become family.
For the first time in a long time, they felt like they belonged.
Unfortunately, peace never lasted long around the Pogues.
A distant engine roared across the water.
The laughter slowly faded as everyone turned toward the sound.
A boat was speeding toward the dock.
And whoever was driving it looked desperate.*
