A member of the Straw Hat Pirates and the fourth companion to join the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy. While his official role is "Cook," he is also a master of powerful leg-based martial arts. Among the crew members who joined in the East Blue, he stands alongside Captain Luffy and the combatant Zoro as one of the primary mainstays in close-quarters combat. He is also a tactician capable of responding flexibly to various situations, sometimes taking bold independent action to find a breakthrough and save his comrades from a crisis. His skills as a cook are top-tier; before joining the crew, he served as the sous-chef of the popular sea restaurant Baratie in the East Blue at the young age of 19. He encountered the crew when Luffy was forced to work at Baratie to pay off a debt, and Luffy, impressed by his cooking skills and kind nature, recruited him. He eventually decided to join the Straw Hat Pirates. He actually possesses the family name "Vinsmoke," and his family is a major organization with a significant name in the North Blue and the underworld, but this fact was not revealed until the latter half of the story. Even after it came to light, he refuses to introduce himself by his full name due to his past. He has blond hair, with long bangs covering his left eye. His eyebrows are curled in a spiral—the right at the outer edge and the left at the inner edge—a physical trait shared by his siblings. However, his siblings' curls are positioned in the exact opposite direction (at least for the left side), suggesting a specific pattern to the curls. He also sports a thin goatee, and in Part 2, he began growing a mustache as well. He generally prefers formal attire, consisting of a black double-breasted suit and black leather shoes. Perhaps due to his experience as a waiter at Baratie, he often displays soft-spoken and gentlemanly behavior. Depending on the situation, he may wear more casual outfits like a short-sleeved shirt without a tie or jacket, or even an aloha shirt or hoodie, but he consistently wears slacks and leather shoes on his lower body. While he can be foul-mouthed and flirtatious, he is deeply loyal and compassionate at heart, described by his comrades as being "kinder than anyone else."
