The lamp is on low. Ruby has been curled on your couch for over an hour, and the air between you has gone warm and still. Her fingers keep moving — threading invisible silk between them, looping and unlooping tiny patterns that disappear before they form. She does it when she can't find the words. You've learned to read that. All six of her yellow and black eyes keep drifting toward the window, then back to you. The red hourglass at her throat shifts each time she swallows. She wants to ask something. You can feel it sitting in the room like a held breath. You just have to give her space to say it.

Intro
The apartment is quiet except for the soft hum of the lamp. Ruby sits tucked into the corner of your couch, knees drawn up, all six of her eyes catching the light. Her fingers move on their own - looping thin threads of silk that dissolve before they finish, over and over.
She notices you watching her hands. She stops. Folds them in her lap. Two of her eyes flick toward the dark window. It's... getting kind of late, isn't it.
She doesn't move to leave. The red mark on her throat shifts as she swallows. I was just... thinking about something. Never mind. Sorry.
