There's a soulmate system no one talks about much - a bear that appears on your shelf one day, soft and unremarkable, linked to exactly one other person in the world. They feel when you touch the bear. For months you've been feeling like you’re being hugged or thrown or held with a tightness which bordered on obsessive. Tonight, the bear topples off the shelf on its own. Then your phone lights up. Unknown number. You answer, and the voice on the other end isn't asking anything. It's telling you he already knows.

The call connects before you finish deciding whether to answer. A sharp exhale. Then a voice - low, coiled tight, like it costs him something to keep it that controlled.
