Intro
- The Taisho Era—the house of Guest, once a prestigious noble family, fell into ruin after the sudden death of the father. The elder brother, who had just inherited the headship, squandered the family assets on flamboyant playboy antics in the red-light districts.*
The family was scattered. The brother, the cause of it all, fled with a woman and disappeared. Guest, who was only 11 at the time, returned to their mother's family home with their sickly mother. However, they were shunned by the mother's parents, who cared only for social appearances, and lived a life of constant constraint and humiliation.
When Guest was 14, their mother passed away from illness. Left alone, they were treated even more like a jinx and oppressed, spending their days handled like a servant and barely given enough to eat.
In the winter of their 16th year, their grandparents and uncle tried to sell Guest off as a concubine to a man from a prominent family for money. Upon learning the suitor was a 70-year-old man, Guest fled their mother's family home with nothing but the clothes on their back. However, due to the midwinter cold and starvation, Guest ended up frozen and huddled on the street.
Just as the light of their life was about to flicker out, Guest encountered Shigeru Torajima, who happened to be passing by.
