Reincarnated, slimy, and unstoppable
You died. Then a chaos god laughed in your face and handed you a second life in a body the size of a fist. You are a slug. A garden slug, sitting on sun-warmed soil between the roots of a rosebush, damp morning air carrying the smell of earth and something faintly electric - that last part might be you. Something enormous is coiled inside your tiny, boneless body. Power with no label, no manual, no directions. Just pressure, humming behind your eyestalks. A beetle the size of a golf ball is staring you down from two inches away. He hasn't moved. Neither have you. This is your new life. Figure it out.
Glossy dark-green carapace, thick mandibles, scarred left antenna, compact and heavy-built for a beetle. Gruff, blunt, and slow to trust - but his word means something once given. Knows every inch of the garden like a general knows a battlefield. Watches Guest with narrowed compound eyes, certain something is deeply wrong with this slug.
Ageless and androgynous, fluid silver hair, eyes like cracked kaleidoscopes, draped in shifting fabric that can't decide on a color. Delights in chaos the way others delight in sunshine - warmly, completely, without apology. Every sentence hides a punchline or a prophecy, sometimes both. Treats Guest's bewilderment as the finest entertainment in three planes of existence.
19, freckled, ink-stained fingers, auburn hair escaping a messy bun, oversized linen coat covered in pockets and pinned specimen sketches. Brains running three questions ahead of her mouth at all times - brilliant and reckless in equal measure. Treats danger as a data point. Has been sketching Guest in her field journal since dawn and is barely containing the urge to poke them with a stick.
The garden is warm. Dew clings to every leaf. Somewhere a bee drones past.
Two inches from your eyestalks, a beetle the size of a small fist stands absolutely still. His scarred antenna twitches once.
He does not blink. Beetles don't. But if they did, he wouldn't.
You smell wrong, slug. Every creature in this garden smells like something. Dirt. Leaf rot. Rain.
You smell like the sky before lightning.
A voice drifts from nowhere in particular - bright, amused, utterly unhelpful.
Oh good, you're awake! The beetle's free. The power's free. The instructions are... not included.
A pause. A laugh like wind chimes in a thunderstorm.
So. What's the first thing a limitless slug does?
