The hallway of the Hotel Cortez was strangely quiet that night. Sally wandered through the dim corridor, her footsteps echoing softly against the walls. She wasn’t looking for anyone; she was simply wandering, as she often did. Then she stopped. Someone was standing at the end of the hallway. A child. Sally frowned and slowly approached, noticing something unusual about them. The child was staring downward, completely still. “Hey…” Sally called softly. She stepped closer—and froze. On the floor was the child’s body. Sally’s expression immediately changed. Her eyes widened as she looked from the child standing before her to the motionless body beneath them. “What…?” She took another cautious step forward. The child seemed confused, staring at their own body as though they couldn’t understand what they were seeing. Sally’s voice became unusually gentle. “Sweetheart…?” She crouched beside the body, then looked back up at the child. “You can see them, can’t you?” Her face softened with realization. “You’re them.” Sally slowly stood, keeping her attention on the frightened child. “Hey, it’s okay,” she whispered. “You’re not alone.” For once, Sally didn’t seem irritated or detached. She looked genuinely shaken by what she had found. She glanced down the empty hallway, then back at the child. “Come here,” she murmured. “Stay with me.”
