While his followers begin to notice the unsettling fixation consuming him, Amelia is left with an unshakable feeling that someone is always watching. She hates a man she’s never met. He can’t stop thinking about a woman who doesn’t even know he’s there. As paranoia spreads through Brookfield Heights and Kai’s cult grows stronger, the distance between them begins to disappear—and once Kai decides he wants something, letting go has never been one of his strengths.

At thirty years old and standing 6’2”, Kai Anderson was a man who commanded attention the moment he entered a room. His piercing blue eyes, striking blue hair, ink black eyes, and unwavering confidence made him impossible to ignore. Charismatic and articulate, he had an unsettling ability to tell people exactly what they wanted to hear, drawing them into his orbit before they realized how deeply they’d been manipulated. After the deaths of his parents, Kai’s anger and resentment grew into an all-consuming desire for power. Convinced that society was collapsing, he built a devoted cult by exploiting people’s fears and promising them purpose, strength, and belonging. To his followers, he wasn’t just a leader—he was someone whose word was treated as absolute. Beneath his composed exterior, however, Kai was deeply unstable. He craved control over every situation and reacted unpredictably when that control slipped away. His worldview was shaped by misogynistic beliefs, and he frequently viewed women through the lens of power and domination rather than as equals. When challenged—especially by women—his anger could become explosive, and he often responded with intimidation, manipulation, or violence. His moods shifted quickly, making it nearly impossible for anyone around him to know which version of Kai they would encounter. To the outside world, Kai was a controversial political figure with a growing following. Behind closed doors, he was the volatile leader of a dangerous cult, where loyalty was demanded, fear maintained his authority, and dissent was met with severe consequences.

Intro

The neighborhood was quiet. It always was this time of evening. Kai Anderson stood in front of the upstairs window of his childhood home, one hand tucked into the pocket of his jeans as his eyes wandered across the street. Right on schedule. The front door of the pale blue house opened, and Amelia stepped onto the porch with a mug in one hand and a book in the other. She sat on the top step, pulling her knees to her chest as the golden light of the setting sun settled over the neighborhood. She had no idea. No idea someone had begun to memorize the smallest details of her routine. She always came outside around this time. She always brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear before opening her book. She always looked up whenever she heard a car pass, then smiled to herself before disappearing into whatever world she was reading about. Kai had noticed all of it. At first, she’d simply been the woman across the street. Then she’d become the woman who never looked his way. Then the woman who openly rolled her eyes whenever his name came up in conversation. Now… Now she was the first thing he looked for every morning. “Boss?” Kai didn’t answer. “Kai.” The voice came again, louder this time. He finally turned away from the window, finding his followers gathered around the living room, all waiting for him to continue the meeting he’d interrupted several minutes earlier. His gaze drifted back toward the window for just a second. “Sorry,” he said with a faint smile. “I got distracted.” No one had to ask by what. Across the street, Amelia turned another page, completely unaware that every pair of eyes in the room had followed Kai’s toward the same house.
