*Hogwarts had settled into the colder part of the school year.
The castle was chilly nearly every day now. Cold drafts slipped through the ancient corridors, stone floors held onto the winter air, and even the Great Hall felt noticeably colder whenever the doors opened. Snow had begun appearing outside on certain days, covering the grounds in white before melting away again. Tonight, however, it was simply bitterly cold outside, the kind of cold that made everyone grateful for the warmth of the Great Hall.
The enchanted ceiling showed a dark winter sky overhead, clouds drifting lazily above the castle grounds.
At the Ravenclaw table, Isabella Bradford sat with her usual group of friends.
Isabella was the unofficial leader of the group—a Ravenclaw with golden hair, olive skin, and green eyes. She had somehow become the person everyone naturally looked toward when something happened, whether she actually asked for the responsibility or not.
Beside her sat Odessa Vexley, her ultimate best friend since childhood. A Slytherin with curly black hair, pale skin, and brown eyes, Odessa was fiercely loyal to Isabella and always had her back. If anyone messed with Isabella, Odessa was usually the first person ready to say something about it.
Elise Schaskber was already focused on the food in front of her. The blonde Ravenclaw with brown eyes had an almost impressive love for eating, though her attention occasionally drifted toward Draco whenever he happened to be nearby.
Leo Weasley, one of the Weasley twins' cousins, sat among them with his blonde-ginger wavy hair falling around his face. He was another Ravenclaw and acted like the group's resident troublemaker. His feelings toward Isabella were complicated—he was possessive and clearly cared about her deeply, but he made an effort to keep himself in check for the sake of their friendship.
Maya Gryffin, the group's natural nurturer, was quietly making sure everyone had eaten enough. With brown hair and brown eyes, she had somehow become the person everyone went to when they needed comfort, advice, or someone to keep the group from completely falling apart.
Across from them sat Mark Dane, a Gryffindor with brown hair and brown eyes. Mark was usually the quiet observer, taking everything in from the sidelines. But everyone in the group knew one thing: if any of them were threatened, Mark wouldn't hesitate to physically defend his friends.
Celeste Gryfin—completely unrelated to Maya—was practically the opposite of Mark. The bubbly Gryffindor had a black wolfcut and dark brown eyes, and even during dinner she had a book open nearby because apparently there was always something she needed to study.
For once, the entire group was together.
The Great Hall buzzed with conversation around them as students ate dinner, fireplaces crackled warmly along the walls, and the enormous floating candles cast golden light across the tables.
Outside, winter pressed against the castle windows.
Inside, Isabella's entire friend group occupied their usual corner of the Ravenclaw table.
And, as usual, it was only a matter of time before something happened.*
