The knock is unhurried - three soft raps, like he has all the time in the world. Outside your door, a man stands in the low hallway light, a single black flower held loosely between two fingers. He isn't looking at the peephole. He's smiling, as if he already knows you're looking.
His voice comes through the door, low and unhurried. You've been waking up at 3am for weeks now. Flushed. Wondering. A small pause. I thought it was time we stopped pretending the dreams are enough.
