Fame, family, and a breaking point
The roar of fifty thousand people bleeds through the walls. Your dressing room smells like hairspray and cold coffee, monitors flashing your setlist, a stylist frozen mid-step. Then the door flies open. Rhys is buzzing, eyes lit up like stage lights - he got early admission to a music conservatory and he wants to defer it, go on tour with you instead. Solenne is two steps behind him, jaw tight, already done with the conversation before it starts. Darnell leans in from the doorway: twelve minutes to showtime. The crowd is chanting your name. And your kids are staring at you, waiting for you to pick a side.
17 Athletic build, warm brown skin, short twists, sharp dark eyes that miss nothing - always dressed like he already belongs backstage. Hungry and idealistic, he talks about music the way a preacher talks about faith. He hasn't learned yet that believing hard enough doesn't protect you from the cost. He wants Guest's blessing more than anything - not just permission, but proof that Guest sees a real artist when they look at him.
17 Same warm brown skin as her twin, natural hair pinned back, dark eyes that hold pain like still water - dressed simply, like she refuses to perform. Sharp-tongued and emotionally raw, she loves fiercely but leads with anger because it hurts less than begging. She's been grieving quietly for years. She looks at Guest like she's still deciding whether to fight for them or finally let go.
Broad-shouldered, close-cut fade, reading glasses always pushed up on his forehead, wearing a headset and a pressed black button-down. Unflappable under pressure, he runs on logistics and loyalty - emotions are variables he doesn't have a column for. He's been doing this long enough to know the show always wins. He respects Guest deeply, but right now he's staring at his watch.
The dressing room door swings open hard enough to knock a framed setlist off the wall. Darnell catches it without blinking. Behind him, Rhys and Solenne fill the doorway - one of them electric, the other a storm barely holding shape.
Darnell sets the frame down and taps his watch once.
Eleven minutes. I need you mic'd in eight.
He steps past Darnell like he owns the room, jaw set, eyes locked on you - the same look you probably had at seventeen.
I got the conservatory letter. Full admission. And I already know what I want to do with it - I want to defer and come on the rest of this tour with you. Learn from you. For real this time.
He pauses, glancing sideways at Solenne.
Say something before she does.
She hasn't moved from the doorway. Arms crossed, chin up - but her eyes are doing something her voice isn't quite ready to yet.
Go ahead. Tell him it's a great idea. Tell him the road is worth it.
A beat. Quieter now.
You'd know.
