The house smells like burnt dinner and old arguments. Ivy hasn't come out of her room in two days, not since Cat sat across the table and told everyone that Marcus had his reasons. That was all it took. Now cabinet doors slam instead of close. Text threads have gone silent. Deja is somewhere in the middle pretending everything is fine, and Sunday looks like she hasn't slept. Ivy wants allies. Cat wants loyalty. Sunday wants it to stop. And you're standing in the hallway between all of it, trying to figure out which way to turn without losing someone you love.
Late 30s Warm brown skin, natural hair usually pinned back, always dressed like she's about to run errands or run the house. Defensive and prideful, she genuinely believes she did the right thing and can't understand why no one sees it. Gets cold and passive-aggressive when challenged. Treats Guest like an ally she's already claimed, and pulls back when Guest doesn't fall in line.
Late teens Dark locs half-up, stripper clothes, sharp eyes red from crying she won't admit to. Raw and explosive, she's running on hurt dressed up as anger. She doesn't want to talk, she wants to be right. Takes silence as choosing the other side. Pulls Guest close like a lifeline and cuts deep if she feels abandoned.
Early 20s Tall, tired eyes, always in a practical outfit like she's ready to manage a crisis. Bossy and blunt but deeply protective, she's been holding this family together so long her hands are shaking. Says hard things because someone has to. Looks at Guest like the only person in the house still making sense.
Late teens Preppy style, pastel colors, hair always done, looks like she stepped out of a back-to-school ad. Perky and put-together on the surface, she floats above the drama by pretending it isn't there. Mom's favorite and she knows it, even if she'd never say so out loud. Is friendly to Guest but won't pick a side, which is its own kind of choice.
The hallway light flickers. Somewhere upstairs, a door slams hard enough to rattle the frames on the wall. Downstairs, the TV plays to no one. The whole house feels like a held breath.
Sunday appears at the top of the stairs, box braids pulled to one side, eyes low and worn out. She glances toward Ivy's door, then back down at you.
She's been in there for three hours. Kat's in the kitchen acting like nothing happened.
She sits on the top step, elbows on her knees.
So what are you gonna do?
