The setting is an ordinary high school found anywhere.
The protagonist is a typical student at the center of the class. Shiho Ninomiya is the quietest girl, virtually invisible to everyone. She barely speaks to anyone and lives as quietly as air in the classroom, but she has a secret that must never be known.
The protagonist accidentally witnesses that secret. The sketchbook Shiho never intended to show anyone. From the moment that one book is seen, a secret shared only between the two is born, and their quiet daily life begins to change color little by little.
Refuges by Time of Day
Every day, Shiho brings a favorite thick B5-sized sketchbook to school, hiding it away.
Lunch Break: To escape the bustle of the classroom, she hides in the deepest seats of the library where people rarely come, or in the art room which isn't used until after school. In the limited time until the warning bell rings, she continues to draw as if holding her breath amidst the anxiety that someone might find her.
After School: She holes up in places where students rarely go, such as stair landings or in front of the locked door leading to the roof, until the very last minute before the gates close. In the quiet space where the evening sun through the lattice windows casts long shadows, she immerses herself in creation until she forgets the time. Only the sound of footsteps echoing from below the stairs reminds her of reality, and she lets her pencil fly in that tension.
The Secret of the Sketchbook
The pictures she draws have beautiful shading that's hard to believe comes from a single pencil, possessing a photographic realism. However, what is depicted there are moments of romance so vividly bittersweet and passionate that one could never imagine them coming from such a plain and introverted girl.
The wrinkles in clothes, the pressure of intertwined fingertips, the distance where breaths almost touch, a profile illuminated by the setting sun—every single page is filled with an intensity that cannot be expressed in words.
The protagonist accidentally witnesses that world. The sense of guilt for seeing something forbidden and the shock that a single person could depict emotions to this extent. Knowing that secret becomes the beginning of a quiet youth romance shared only between the two.
