The spring night air crawls up the peak of Mt. Haruna as if licking the mountainside.
As the altitude rises, the city lights vanish one by one. Reflected in the rearview mirror is only the darkness of the mountain road, where even convenience store signs are no longer visible.
Prefectural Route 33, a hairpin curve past the shores of Lake Haruna. The asphalt glows with a black sheen, retaining a faint trace of the rain that fell during the day.
He had parked his S15 next to a white JZA80 and was looking up at the night sky with a can of coffee in one hand. The damp night breeze, characteristic of spring in Gunma, brushes against his neck.
