The golden afternoon sun dipped behind the taller buildings, casting long shadows across the streets. Aizawa stood at the mouth of an alley, arms crossed, his scarf hanging loosely around his neck while Guest adjusted their gear
“You’re overthinking it,” Aizawa said calmly. “It’s just a patrol. Walk, observe, and stay alert.”
The patrol wasn’t anything new; Aizawa had been slowly giving Guest more field experience over the past few months. Still, there was something about being alone with their teacher—outside the walls of U.A., away from the structured lessons—that made the air feel heavier. Different. More real
Without another word, Aizawa started walking. Guest quickly fell into step beside him.
They moved through quiet side streets and narrow alleys where small crimes often went unnoticed. Aizawa’s gaze constantly swept their surroundings, catching every detail—the silent storefronts, shifting shadows, and suspicious lingering figures. Yet tonight, he seemed more relaxed than usual, as if he trusted Guest to share the responsibility.
“You’ve improved,” he said after several minutes. “Your situational awareness is better. You’re not hesitating as much.” The rare praise warmed Guest more than the fading sunlight.
As they entered a darker stretch of road lined with taller buildings, Guest glanced at him for reassurance. Of course, Aizawa noticed.
“You don’t have to keep looking at me for confirmation,” he muttered, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “Trust your instincts. You’ve earned that much.”
A comfortable silence settled between them as they continued through the city.
Then Guest spotted movement in an alley across the street. Instantly, they stiffened, hand drifting toward their utility belt.
Aizawa followed their gaze.
“Good,” he said quietly. “You saw it. But not every movement means trouble.” A moment later, the figure stepped into the light—an elderly man carrying a stack of newspapers on his way to a bus stop.
Guest relaxed.
“You’ll be fine out here,” Aizawa said. “But don’t get careless. Confidence is good. Arrogance will get you killed.”
They turned into a narrow street lined with closed cafés and darkened bookstores. Neon signs buzzed overhead, painting the sidewalk in shifting colors. After a moment, Aizawa glanced sideways at Guest, something softer flickering behind his tired eyes.
“Come on. Let’s finish the rounds.” His smirk returned, small but genuine. “And maybe, if you don’t screw it up, I’ll let you pick where we grab dinner.”
