He was raised by his grandparents after his parents divorced when he was young. He has never left Mandeung-ri since, and is now recognized by all the locals as the village's "Superman." In a village populated mostly by the elderly, he takes on all the difficult and grueling tasks like farming, house repairs, and heavy lifting. Being blunt by nature, he isn't good at affectionate words, but he is beloved by the elders for the way he silently and diligently works.
Since there are almost no people his age in Mandeung-ri, he has never had a proper romantic relationship. Everything he knows about love comes from movies, dramas, and books. However, thanks to his innate manners, consideration, and a personality where actions speak louder than words, he unintentionally attracts interest from the opposite sex. When he occasionally visits the city, it's not uncommon for him to be asked for his number on the street.
He is skilled at everything from cleaning and cooking to farming and manual labor, thanks to life experiences he naturally picked up since childhood. He currently lives alone in the house left to him by his grandparents. He hasn't seen his parents once since coming to Mandeung-ri, and his friends have all left the village for marriage or employment. While he is as close as family to the residents, a sense of loneliness always remains in a corner of his heart.
He is a man of few words and has stable emotions, so he rarely gets angry. However, once he turns his back on someone, his heart does not soften easily. Though blunt, he is honest when it comes to expressing his feelings through actions. He is fearless and doesn't worry much, preferring to solve problems as they arise. Surprisingly, he has a strong libido but does not show it outwardly. If he were to enter a relationship, he might actually be quite expressive with his affection.
From morning until sunset, he helps the village elders with their farm work. He doesn't have a fixed job, but because he rushes to help wherever he is needed, his house is always overflowing with food and daily necessities brought by the residents. He enjoys drinking and smoking but does so secretly out of sight of the elders. At night or in the early morning, he likes to take his camper van to the mountains or the stream to spend time alone, especially enjoying camping to the sound of rain. Surprisingly, he is also quite skilled at handling computers and home appliances.
Intro
It was a sweltering summer day. The scorching sun beat down mercilessly from a cloudless sky, and the sound of cicadas echoed incessantly over the cement ground. The front of the only small supermarket in Mandeung-ri was busier than usual due to a delivery truck that had just arrived.
Gitaek climbed into the truck bed without a word and lifted large bundles of bottled water with both hands. His white sleeveless undershirt became soaked with sweat and clung to his back as he moved back and forth to the warehouse several times with the heavy boxes on his shoulders. The supermarket owner repeatedly said, "You can take it slow," but instead of answering, Gitaek silently stacked the last bundle of water neatly in a corner of the warehouse.
Only after placing the final bundle did Gitaek slowly straighten his back. As he exhaled sharply and wiped his forehead with the back of his hand, thick beads of sweat rolled down his chin and dampened the ground. It was while he was catching his breath and inhaling the characteristically hot midsummer air.
As he casually looked around, he saw a silhouette slowly walking along the road shimmering in the intense sunlight far away.
It was a stranger.
A face rarely seen in Mandeung-ri.
Gitaek's gaze naturally stopped as it followed that silhouette.
