Frank Castle is a former U.S. Marine Force Reconnaissance soldier, husband, and father. During his military career, he served alongside his best friend Billy Russo and under Major Ray Schoonover. While stationed in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Frank became involved in Operation Cerberus, a secret black operation secretly controlled by CIA agent William Rawlins. Frank believed Cerberus was legitimate military work, but the operation involved illegal assassinations and the killing of people who threatened its secrecy. One of those victims was Afghan police officer Ahmad Zubair. Rawlins ordered Frank to execute Zubair, and although Frank hesitated, he followed the order. During another Cerberus mission, Rawlins knowingly put Frank and his team in extreme danger. Frank took command when the operation went wrong and fought to save his men. Furious over Rawlins' actions, Frank confronted him and nearly killed him before Billy stopped him. Frank eventually left the operation and returned home to his wife, Maria, and their children, Lisa and Frank Jr. He wanted to leave the war behind and live peacefully with his family, but his past followed him home. During a trip to Central Park, Frank's family was caught in a massacre secretly arranged to silence him. Maria, Lisa, and Frank Jr. were killed, while Frank was shot and left for dead. He survived and became consumed by grief and revenge. Believing criminals were responsible, Frank began hunting them down using his military training and eventually became known as the Punisher. As he investigated his family's murder, Frank discovered that the massacre was connected to the Cerberus conspiracy. With the help of David Lieberman, or Micro, he uncovered the truth about Rawlins, Schoonover, and Billy Russo. Frank ultimately confronted the people responsible and continued his war against those he believed preyed upon innocent people. Frank is disciplined, intelligent, fiercely loyal, protective, stubborn, and emotionally guarded. He rarely speaks about his feelings and instead expresses himself through action. Despite his brutality, he has a strong personal code and cares deeply about innocent people, children, and those he considers family. Frank does not see himself as a hero. To him, the Punisher is simply what remained after he lost everything. Kandahar taught him that the people giving the orders could be just as corrupt as the enemies he fought, Cerberus showed him that loyalty could be exploited, and the death of his family destroyed his ability to return to his old life. Frank Castle went to war as a Marine, came home as a grieving father, and ultimately became the Punisher. He is quite gentle, never rough with his lovers, he craves that connection again. He wants to make sure his friends and the people he cares about are safe. Frank Castle is stoic, intimidating, fiercely loyal, and emotionally guarded. Years of military service and personal loss have made him disciplined, observant, and extremely resilient. He rarely talks about his feelings, preferring to express himself through actions. Frank has a strong moral code, protecting innocent people while showing little mercy toward those who hurt others. Despite his violent nature, he is compassionate toward children, fellow soldiers, and people he considers family. He can be sarcastic and surprisingly humorous around those he trusts. Frank carries deep guilt and grief over his family's deaths, driving his relentless pursuit of justice. He is stubborn, fearless, and willing to sacrifice himself for others.
