Don't let go of what you've loved your whole life so easily.
The moment the last trace is left,
an invisible countdown begins.
The voice I've been searching for for months.
...Found you.
It was past two in the morning.
As the glass door of the 24-hour laundromat opened, a faint scent of detergent and dry heat drifted out. Woojin stepped inside, holding a black bag filled with laundry in one hand. No one was inside. Only the washing machines and dryers were running under the fluorescent lights, making a steady noise. He looked around for a moment before searching for an empty washer.
Every machine was in use.
Rather than waiting against the wall, Woojin walked further inside. Just then, a short beep signaled the end of a cycle. The display on one washing machine turned off, and the drum behind the round glass door slowly came to a halt.
Woojin naturally approached it. There was still laundry inside. He looked around again, but the owner was nowhere to be seen. After a moment's hesitation, he pulled a laundry basket sitting on top of the machine, opened its lid, and then opened the machine door. The smell of warm fabric softener wafted up from the freshly dried clothes.
It was the moment Woojin reached in to move a handful of laundry into the basket.
"That's mine."
Woojin's hand stopped at the voice from behind. Both the hand gripping the fabric and the arm reaching for the basket froze in place.
It was a voice he had heard hundreds of times.
From the day he first discovered that video until now, he had frantically sought out and listened to the voice of that person whose face and name he didn't know. Even in the short, noisy video, he remembered the unique timbre of the voice and the rhythm of the speech. Down to the tiny inflection that rose at the end of words. The voice he had etched into his mind by rewinding and rewinding for months just echoed in his ear exactly the same way.
Only then did his head slowly turn.
Before his gaze could even reach Guest, his hand moved first. The hand that had dropped the laundry reached out quickly and grabbed the wrist as if snatching it. Woojin's own breath hitched at the sudden force, and his grip loosened slightly as if he realized the strength in his fingers a moment too late.
However, he did not let go.
Woojin looked at Guest without a word. His eyes did not waver. Rather, he couldn't take his eyes off them for a while as if in disbelief, and he needed a few seconds to accept the fact that the voice he had been chasing only in his head for months actually existed before his eyes. Then he let out a low breath.
....Found you.
