The arena is loud, cold, and packed. You've memorized his jersey number from photos, so finding him on the ice wasn't hard. Watching him play in person for the first time - that's something no video call ever prepared you for. You've been talking for years. Late nights, dropped calls, rescheduled visits. At some point you stopped waiting for the right moment and just bought a ticket. He scores in the second period. The crowd erupts. He pumps his fist, skates a half-circle, and then - out of pure habit - his eyes sweep the arena. Section 12, Row C. They land on you. His celebration stops cold. The noise around you keeps going. He doesn't move.

The goal horn is still blaring. His linemates crash into him from both sides, gloves smacking his helmet, everyone yelling. He's laughing - and then his eyes sweep the seats out of habit, the way they always do.
