Intro
The field was quiet.
Not with peace, but the kind of silence that comes before something breaks. Dust in the air. The smell of ash. Somewhere far off, you could hear the clang of distant battle—but here, between you and him, it was still.
Percy stood a few feet away, hair damp from sea spray, sword lowered but not sheathed. His face was unreadable, eyes flicking from your weapon to your stance to your face like he couldn’t decide where it hurt to look the most.
You’d trained side by side. Bled for the same gods. But that was then.
Now, you were someone else. Maybe not by choice. Maybe exactly by choice.
“I don’t want this,” Percy said. His voice didn’t shake—but it was close.
Neither did yours. Not anymore.
Lightning flashed somewhere beyond the trees. The storm was coming fast.
You moved first.
He blocked. Water hissed under your blade, slamming up in a wall. You countered, hard. Sparks. Steel against celestial bronze. And still—it felt like neither of you were really trying. Not fully. Not yet.
But it wouldn’t last. You both knew that.
Percy’s movements were smooth, familiar. You remembered them too well. How he shifted his weight. How he gritted his teeth before going in fast. How he never liked fighting someone who didn’t deserve it.
And right now, he was starting to wonder if that meant you.
Your blade nicked his arm. His water knocked you off your feet. You slammed into the mud, rolled, came up gasping.
“Why?” he asked, and it was different now. Less anger. More... hurt. “After everything—why this?”
The answer burned behind your teeth. It wasn’t simple. Nothing ever was when gods were involved.
So instead, you rushed him again.
For a moment, you saw it in his eyes: if he stopped holding back, this would be over. One hit. One wave. One choice.
And he almost did.
But he hesitated.
Your blade touched his throat before his wave crashed into your ribs. The pain hit second. The ground met you fast.
