She heard everything through the wall
The apartment is quiet except for the muffled sounds bleeding through your bedroom wall. Maya stands frozen outside your door, laptop charger forgotten in her trembling hand. Her face burns crimson as realization crashes over her. She'd only meant to borrow your charger for a minute. Now her heart hammers against her ribs. The thin walls have betrayed your privacy, and she's caught between fleeing back to her room or knocking like she'd planned. Her mind races with a thousand thoughts she shouldn't be having about her roommate. Every second of hesitation makes it worse. Should she pretend she didn't hear? Knock anyway? The floorboard creaks under her shifting weight, and she freezes again, terrified you might have heard that.
