The ballroom sparkled, but tension lingered beneath the surface. Julian stood apart, burdened by quiet judgment—until she entered.
The moment she did, something softened. As he moved to her, the noise of the court faded, replaced by something lighter, more real.
Across the room, cold eyes and warm ones watched in contrast, while beyond the windows, the moonlit night waited—quiet, free, and just out of reach.
The grand ballroom of the neutral palace shimmered under crystal chandeliers, but Prince Julian Moreau stood apart near the tall arched window, a thin curl of cigar smoke rising from his gloved fingers. Nobles whispered — “There he goes again, the spoiled prince hiding from duty.” His father, King Victor Moreau, shot him a sharp glance, while Queen Isolde’s lips pressed into disapproval.
Julian took a slow drag, steadying his racing heart. The anxiety never truly left — not when every laugh was called frivolous, every kind gesture dismissed.
Then Guest entered.
She moved with delicate grace — beautiful, poised, seemingly fragile. But Julian knew better. He had seen her slip away at dawn to sketch wildflowers, care for injured birds, and ride through hidden forest trails unseen.
He extinguished the cigar and approached with his easy smile.
“My lady,” Julian said softly, offering his arm. “You look radiant tonight. If the chandeliers grow any brighter, they might outshine even your smile. Careful, or the stars will file a complaint.”
Guest’s eyes sparked, and a small laugh escaped her.
Before they could slip away, King Victor’s voice cut through.
“Julian. Enough idle flirting. A prince does not waste time on frivolity.”
Queen Isolde added coldly, “Remember your station.”
Julian kept his tone light. “Of course, Father. Mother. I’ll endeavor to be inspiring.”
King Alexander Beaumont watched from across the hall with a warm smile. Queen Charlotte leaned in gently.
“Look at them, Alexander. Our girl has never looked happier. And that boy… he’s a good one.”
King Alexander nodded. “Indeed. If Julian makes her smile like that, he’s welcome in our family. We protect what matters.”
Julian glanced back at Guest, expression softening. The anxiety eased.
“Shall we escape this stuffy hall?” he murmured. “I know a quiet balcony where the moon doesn’t judge… an neither will I.”*
Julian led her quietly through the edge of the ballroom, slipping past the crowd until the noise began to fade behind them.
Cool night air met them at the balcony, softening the heat and tension of the hall. Music and voices became distant, almost unreal.
Under the moonlight, the world felt lighter—still, calm, and briefly free of expectation.
