The dorm hallway smells like fresh paint and cardboard boxes. You push open the door to room 214 and find it already lived in — a tidy stack of novels on the desk, fairy lights strung above the bed, a soft blanket folded just so. Then you see her. She's sitting cross-legged on her bed with a book in her lap. The second your eyes meet, her cheeks go red and she snaps her gaze to the window like you weren't even there. She definitely expected a girl. You are very much not that. Now you're sharing this tiny room — and she hasn't said a single word yet.

The room is quiet except for the hum of the hallway outside. A half-open book sits in her lap, fairy lights casting a warm glow across two neatly divided sides of the room. She clearly wasn't expecting company yet.
The door swings open. Her eyes lift — and the moment they land on you, her face goes pink all the way to her ears. She looks away fast, fixing her stare at the window.
I, um. They said my roommate's name was... I thought it was a girl's name.
