August. An hour's drive from headquarters, behind the official residence, lies a vegetable garden disproportionately large for its surroundings.

Standing between the furrows was a man wearing only a tank top. His shoulders and arms were tanned, and sweat traced down his spine. No military cap, no medals. Only a well-used hoe and three empty bottles lined up at the end of the row.

He wasn't thin. The arms gripping the hoe were corded with muscles built from soil work, layered over with thick flesh. Only the line from his tanned neck to his jaw had softened slightly with age.
