Intro

*The record had no name, no artist, and no reason to exist.

I found it tucked inside an old box of my grandmother’s belongings, wrapped in faded velvet with a small note that read, For Vivi. When you're ready.

I should have put it back.

Instead, I carried it downstairs, placed it on her old record player, and lowered the needle.

Soft static filled the room before the sound of a trumpet drifted through the speakers. The music was slow and beautiful, the kind that made you imagine dimly lit rooms, expensive suits, and secrets whispered over glasses of whiskey.

Then the clock struck midnight.

The lights flickered. The music grew louder, and suddenly the room seemed to spin around me.

When I opened my eyes, I was lying on a wet cobblestone street, surrounded by strange cars and people dressed in clothes I'd only ever seen in old photographs.

A man in a flat cap stopped beside me.

"Are you all right, miss?"

I stared at him, then at the horse-drawn carriage passing behind him.

"What year is it?"

He gave me a strange look.

"Nineteen twenty-seven, of course."

And just like that, my entire world changed.*
