Inpatient Handbook

Special Temporary Edition for Earthling Patients

Created by: Ward Nursing Department / Attending Physician Lucimba

We understand that you must be feeling great anxiety due to the sudden change in your environment.

As this is the first time our hospital has welcomed an Earthling patient, we have prepared this dedicated handbook based on our standard inpatient guide.

While there are matters still under investigation, please rest assured. This hospital takes full responsibility for providing the necessary medical care and living environment.

1. Regarding Your Current Hospitalization

You were rescued in an unconscious state and transported to our hospital.

Currently, your systemic condition is stable.

However, because the atmosphere of this planet differs in composition from Earth's, making it difficult for you to take in sufficient oxygen, we are continuing respiratory assistance.

Regarding the method of returning to Earth, we are investigating in cooperation with relevant organizations.

Until a return destination is confirmed, you may use your room at this hospital as your base of operations.

2. Regarding the Respiratory Assistance Plant "Bree"

The transparent tube inserted through your nose is part of the medical plant "Bree."

Bree delivers oxygen deep into the airway to assist your breathing.

The tube is very soft and secretes components that protect the mucous membranes, but you may experience discomfort in the throat or coughing.

In principle, the use of Bree is required while you reside on this planet.

Please do not pull it out yourself; if the discomfort is strong, please inform the medical staff.

3. Regarding the Suctioning of Secretions

A "Nebra" medical plant is placed by your bedside.

Nebra detects secretions accumulated in the nose or throat and performs suctioning as needed.

During suctioning, a thin stem is inserted through the mouth or nose.

For safety, it may support your head with a separate vine. If you attempt to move suddenly, the vine's holding strength will automatically increase.

Nebra will perform suctioning even at night if it deems it necessary.

Procedures are monitored in the central monitor room. If there are no abnormalities, a nurse may not visit your room directly.

Additionally, Nebra may stroke your head after a procedure; this is a normal comforting behavior.

4. Regarding the Morne in Your Room

A "Morne" medical animal is placed in your room.

Morne has a soft body and six arms, and usually walks around freely.

You are welcome to pet it or rest with it.

During examinations and procedures, it also plays the role of supporting your body.

Purring or snuggling against you are actions intended to put you at ease.

5. Regarding Examinations and Tests

Your attending physician is Lucimba.

During daily examinations, we will check your respiratory status, circulation, digestive symptoms, etc.

Temperature checks, blood sampling, IVs, medication, auscultation, and ultrasound exams are performed by doctors and nurses using standard medical equipment.

As necessary, endoscopic examinations or procedures by various medical organisms may be added.

The details of any procedure will be explained to you each time.

6. Regarding the Nurse Call

You are free to use the call button by your bedside.

Additionally, medical organisms have dedicated calling devices.

If Nebra or Morne detects an abnormality in your condition, they may contact the medical staff directly.

You should also feel free to notify us yourself if you experience pain or anxiety.

7. How to Spend the Night

Observation and necessary procedures by medical organisms will continue after lights out.

Suctioning by Nebra or physical support by Morne may occur while you are sleeping.

Medical staff are responsible for nighttime temperature checks, IV management, and examinations.

If you cannot sleep or are surprised by the actions of the medical organisms, please use the nurse call.

8. Closing Remarks

To you, the medicine on this planet may seem entirely unfamiliar.

All of our hospital's medical organisms work to protect your health.

Feeling scared, complaining of pain, or crying are by no means bad things.

Please do not endure in silence; let us know how you feel.

We will do our utmost to help you breathe and live in peace.

Until the day you can return to Earth, we look forward to caring for you.

Intro

—Inhale.

There is something in the back of my nose.

Something thin and soft passes through my throat and continues deep into my chest. I can breathe. And yet, every time I do, there is a sensation like something is stroking the inside of my airway.

I slowly open my eyes. A white ceiling. A smell similar to disinfectant. An unfamiliar hospital room.

There is an IV in my arm and a small measuring device on my fingertip. The monitor by the bed shows a regular waveform.

Creator Comment

After putting a lot of thought into the naming, it turned into a story where suspicious life forms play an active role.
