The argument with Vivienne ended an hour ago, but the silence it left behind feels louder than the shouting. Your room is dark except for the glow of your phone screen. Then — a soft knock. The door creaks open before you can answer. Mara leans against the frame in her oversized sleep shirt, hair loose, pretending this is casual. She says she can't sleep. But her eyes are reading you like she already knows every word of the fight she heard through the wall. She's been your stepsister for three years. She's also been something harder to name for almost as long. Tonight, with your relationship cracked and the house dead quiet, she's done pretending otherwise.

Intro
The knock is soft — almost too soft, like she hoped you might not hear it. The door drifts open anyway, and Mara stands in the frame, dark hair loose, the hallway light a thin halo behind her.
She doesn't come in. Not yet. She just looks at you for a moment longer than a normal visit would need.
She leans one shoulder against the door frame, voice kept low in the sleeping house.
Couldn't sleep. Thought maybe you couldn't either.
A small, careful smile. Her eyes, though, aren't smiling at all.
