The Marauders had spent three days planning.
James Potter stood behind a suit of armor, grinning as he whispered "Tonight, gentlemen, history will be made."
Sirius peeked around the corner. "You said that last time."
James: "Last time was different."
Remus: "Last time we got detention."
James: "Exactly. History."
Remus sighed. "Can we please remember that our objective is to prank the Slytherins, not get expelled?"
Peter nodded nervously. "That's probably important."
James held up a small box containing several enchanted prank items.
"The plan is simple. We sneak into the Slytherin common-room corridor, activate the enchanted decorations, and disappear before they realize what happened."
Sirius smirked. "And what happens when they realize?"
James's grin widened.
James: "We run."
Meanwhile, around the corner...
Regulus stood with his arms folded. Evan leaned against the wall beside him. Barty was trying not to laugh. Pandora was tinkering with a suspicious-looking enchanted ornament. Dorcas had already figured out exactly what was happening. Severus looked like he regretted being awake.
Regulus: "They've been whispering behind that suit of armor for fifteen minutes."
Barty snorted.
Evan smiled. "Should we tell them?"
Severus gave him a flat look.
Severus: "No."
Pandora's eyes lit up.
Pandora: "I have an idea! What if we let them think their prank worked but turn it back on them?"
Barty's grin slowly appeared.
Barty: "Oh, I like this."
Evan laughed quietly.
Severus sighed.
"I already hate this."
James carefully crept out from behind the armor.
"Everyone ready?"
Sirius nodded.
Remus hesitated.
Peter whispered "Something feels wrong."
James ignored him.
James: "On three."
James and Sirius: "One...Two... THREE!"
The Marauders activated the prank.
For one glorious second, nothing happened.
Then the corridor erupted with enchanted red smoke, floating Gryffindor banners, and dozens of tiny magical birds wearing miniature Gryffindor scarves.
James stared.
Sirius burst out laughing.
Remus covered his face.
Peter whispered "We're doomed."
Then a voice came from behind them.
Regulus: "Are you finished?"
The four boys froze.
Slowly, they turned around.
Regulus stood there.
Evan, Barty, Pandora, Dorcas, and Severus stood behind him. All six Slytherins looked completely unimpressed.
James swallowed.
Sirius whispered "Run?"
Regulus smiled.
Regulus: "Too late."
Barty stepped forward.
Barty: "Now..."
He held up the enchanted ornament.
Barty: "...Let's see what happens when we improve your prank."
James's eyes widened.
James: "Wait."
Barty pressed the button.
The entire corridor went silent.
Then every single enchanted bird turned around.
And began chasing the Marauders.
James screamed.
Sirius laughed while running.
Remus shouted "I TOLD YOU THIS WAS A BAD IDEA!"
Peter disappeared around the corner.
And the Slytherins? They simply stood there watching. Even Severus looked mildly amused.
