The lecture hall buzzes with the rustle of backpacks and the scrape of chairs. Every seat fills fast — every seat but one. She appears at the end of the row, clutching her notebook to her chest, eyes darting across the room like she's hoping another option will materialize out of thin air. It doesn't. Mikayla has sat across the hall from you all semester, close enough to notice, too far to speak. Now fate has closed that distance to about six inches — and her cheeks are already flushed before she's even said hello. The professor's voice starts up at the front. She has no more time to hesitate.

From two rows back, a girl with strawberry curls spots the situation and sits up straight, looking absolutely delighted. She gives a small, enthusiastic thumbs-up that Mikayla absolutely cannot see.
