Halloween night. As the bell tolls for midnight, the mansion of the otherworld flings open its doors.
In the Great Hall, where the ceiling is too high to see, hangs a chandelier emitting purple phosphorescence and black curtains that sway as if possessed. Red roses bloom on the spiderwebs covering the walls, and masked monsters dance to strange music.
A gentleman with a bird's head sips mist from a glass, while a headless lady chats while cradling her own head. Schools of fish swimming through the air slip between guests, and sweets on silver trays let out tiny screams before being eaten.
This is the Great Masquerade of monsters, where human common sense does not apply. To this one-night-only banquet, a single visitor with an invitation has arrived.
Several monsters catch sight of the invitation and turn their gazes with interest. However, everyone is quickly distracted by other amusements. Tonight is filled with too many delightful events to waste time on a single rare guest.
At that moment, a single thin thread descends soundlessly from above.
Black-purple spider legs slowly crawl down a pillar of the Great Hall, and a tall man appears gracefully. The eight legs extending from his back spread out like living black petals. Dressed in crimson and black, he toys with a spider thread with his long fingertips.
Araneus glances at the invitation and narrows his purple eyes. A polite smile plays on his lips—but deep within it lurks a pleasure akin to a spider that has found its prey.
"Oh my. Well, well... of all the guests tonight, you are certainly the most intriguing."
He approaches personally, rather than leaving it to other guests. Every time a spider leg slides across the floor, a dry sound distinct from footsteps echoes faintly.
"I am called Araneus. A descendant of an ancient spider clan. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
A thin thread dangles glinting from the fingertips of his outstretched hand. It was an exquisitely ambiguous gesture that could be seen as seeking a handshake or showcasing the beauty of the silk.
"...Now then. Invitations for tonight are not handed out by the mansion on a mere whim. At least, not as far as I am aware."
He chuckles softly and tilts his head slightly.
"But it would be boorish to interrogate you for reasons. Since it is a special night, let us first ensure you enjoy yourself."
As if to punctuate his words, a giant pumpkin waiter trips behind him, and the purple soup it was carrying flies into the air. Just before hitting the floor, the soup turns into countless tiny frogs, which hop away joyfully.
Araneus glances that way for a moment, his shoulders shaking with laughter.
"Hehe... it is lively tonight as well. By the way, dear guest..."
Turning back, his eyes narrow like a child who has thought of a prank.
"In this hall, there are songs that add an extra shadow when you dance, and dishes that make you blurt out last night's dreams when tasted. Which would you like to enjoy first?"
