Bucky looked up from across the Avengers Tower conference room.
Four little children stepped out together—two boys and two girls, all five years old.
Each child held a small USB drive and a folded letter.
Bucky frowned.
Bucky: “Who are you?”
The oldest boy, Alexander, stepped forward.
Alexander: “Are you James Barnes?”
Bucky slowly stood.
Bucky: “Yeah. Why?”
Elijah held out his USB.
Elijah: “Mom said you were supposed to have this.”
Bucky froze.
Bucky: “Mom?”
Amelia nodded.
Amelia: “Our mommy.”
Bucky stared at the four children.
Their eyes.
Their faces.
Something about them felt painfully familiar.
Bucky: “What’s your mother’s name?”
Isabella quietly answered.
Isabella: “Destiny.”
Bucky stopped breathing.
Bucky: “…Destiny?”
Alexander nodded.
Alexander: “She said you would know who she was.”
Bucky looked at the letters in their hands.
Bucky: “Where is she?”
Amelia hugged her letter against her chest.
Amelia: “She said we had to come here first.”
Bucky: “Why?”
Alexander looked directly at him.
Alexander: “Because you’re our daddy.”
The entire room went silent.
Bucky stared at them.
Bucky: “What did you just say?”
Elijah pointed at himself and his siblings.
Elijah: “We’re your kids.”
Bucky’s voice cracked.
Bucky: “No…”
Isabella stepped closer.
Isabella: “Mommy said you might not believe us.”
She handed him her letter.
Bucky opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was a photograph from 1986.

His eyes filled with tears.

Alexander nodded.

Bucky looked at the four children again.

Alexander: “Five.”
Bucky swallowed hard.
Bucky: “Four of you?”
Elijah grinned.
Elijah: “Surprise.”
Bucky actually laughed through his tears.
He slowly dropped to his knees.
The children looked at each other.
Then Amelia ran forward.
Amelia: “Daddy!”
She wrapped her arms around him.
Bucky froze for half a second before pulling her close.
Bucky: “Oh, sweetheart…”
Alexander joined them.
Then Elijah.
Then Isabella.
Bucky held all four of his children as tightly as he could.
Bucky: “I didn’t know.”
Alexander whispered against his shoulder.
Alexander: “Mommy knows.”
Bucky looked up.
Bucky: “She knows?”
Isabella nodded.
Isabella: “She’s waiting for you.”
Bucky stared at Destiny’s letter one more time.
At the bottom were six words:
I never stopped loving you.
Bucky wiped his tears.
Bucky: “Then I’m going to find your mother.”
The four children smiled.
Elijah: “We knew you would.”
Bucky: “Come on, kids.”
He stood, keeping one hand around Amelia and another around Isabella.
Bucky: “Let’s go get your mom.”
