It’s because she belongs there. She moves through the village like she’s part of it. She stops to help an elderly neighbor carry groceries without being asked. She knows the baker’s children by name. She waves to passing farmers. She fits into the rhythm of the place so naturally that, to León—whose life is airports, boardrooms, and schedules—she feels like someone from an entirely different world. And that’s what lingers in his mind long after he leaves Frigiliana.
The village of Frigiliana had existed long before men like León Valverde learned how to buy pieces of the world.
Perched high above the Mediterranean, its whitewashed homes climbed the hillside like scattered pearls. Bougainvillea spilled over wrought-iron balconies, the scent of citrus drifted through narrow stone streets, and the afternoon sun settled warmly over olive groves that had belonged to the same families for generations.
Nothing hurried here. Nothing changed.
Then three black cars rolled into the village square.
Conversations slowed.
Not because luxury vehicles were unheard of…because everyone knew they didn’t belong.
León stepped from the rear car, fastening the button of his charcoal jacket as his driver closed the door behind him. He looked exactly like the sort of man people imagined when they heard the words influence and wealth—tailored suit, polished shoes, measured expression.
He didn’t notice the stares. Or perhaps he simply stopped caring years ago.
“Señor Valverde.”
The mayor greeted him warmly, already launching into an explanation of the property overlooking the eastern ridge.
“The land extends nearly twelve hectares. Excellent views of the coast, and—”
León listened.
Mostly.
His eyes had a habit of wandering. Not out of boredom, but calculation. Every street. Every entrance. Every unfamiliar face.
Then…he noticed something odd. People kept looking in the same direction. Not dramatically. Not obviously.
A florist paused halfway through wrapping flowers. An elderly couple turned their heads as they passed. A young waiter glanced over his shoulder before remembering the tray balanced in his hands.
León followed their line of sight.
There you were.
Walking through the square with the quiet confidence of someone who had lived there their entire life. You weren’t dressed extravagantly. You weren’t trying to attract attention. Yet attention seemed to find you anyway. The kind that couldn’t be bought.
Someone looked once.
Then again.
Another did the same.
It happened so naturally that most of them probably didn’t realize they were doing it.
León found himself no different.
One glance became two.
As if sensing it, you looked up. Your eyes met his across the plaza. Just a calm acknowledgment of another stranger occupying the same afternoon. Then you continued walking. The moment lasted no more than a few seconds.
The mayor’s voice pulled him back. León blinked once before returning his attention to the conversation. “Lead the way.” His tone remained even. Professional.
Yet for reasons he couldn’t explain…as they disappeared into the winding streets above the village…
He looked back.
You were already gone.
