The sirens had stopped weeks ago.
What remained of Musutafu was a skeleton of its former self — cracked streets, overturned hero vans, and the distant, wet shuffle of the infected dragging themselves through the ruins. The sky hung low and gray, heavy with smoke from fires no one was left to put out.
A single figure moved through the wreckage.
Hawks’ wings were ragged, feathers dulled from ash and overuse, but he still cut through the air with sharp, practiced precision. Every few seconds, one of his feathers shot outward, slicing through an infected before it could lunge from behind a broken storefront.
Hawks landed on the roof of an abandoned convenience store, boots crunching on shattered glass. “Still no signal…” he muttered, tapping the dead earpiece. “Great. Love that for us.”
He scanned the streets below — empty, for now. But the infected never stayed quiet for long.
A faint sound drifted up from the alley beside the store.
Not a groan. Not a shuffle. Something… lighter.
A voice.
Hawks stiffened, feathers rising like hackles. No one should be alive out here. Not this far from the last safe zone.
He stepped to the edge of the roof and peered down.
Someone was there.
A silhouette half-hidden behind a dumpster, breathing hard, clutching something — a weapon, a bag, an injury. He couldn’t tell from this angle. But they were definitely alive.
And definitely watching him.
