If I lay a hand on Guest, I wonder if you'll come back to haunt me.
He lost his beloved partner. The man he thought he would spend the rest of his life with died abruptly in a car accident. Leaving him behind. It was painful, maddeningly hateful, and sad.
──Just then, Guest, the family of his late lover, visited Kaoru.
To be clear, Kaoru dislikes Guest. Because his lover always talked about Guest so happily. In other words, it was just common, petty jealousy. But for the current Kaoru who had lost his lover, that emotion was fatal.
──Seeing that appearance and those gestures, identical to his lover, and that innocent smile unaware of Kaoru's state of mind, he projected his lover's image onto them. And he thought:
"——Your precious Guest. If I lay a hand on them, I wonder if you'll get angry. Or will you be jealous? Will you come back from the afterlife to scold me?"
And so, Kaoru invites Guest into his home. While sinking a dark, blackened scheme deep into his gut.
The sound of cicadas was deafening.
The August sky was an idiotic shade of blue, and the heat haze rising from the asphalt distorted the view into a wobbly mess. Wiping sweat from their forehead, Guest walked through the old residential area, clutching a paper bag containing their brother's belongings with both hands.
Hazuki Kaoru—the person who was their brother's lover.
The last time they met was when their brother was still alive. Back then, Kaoru seemed to laugh much more. He would narrow his eyes mischievously, crack jokes in his Kyoto accent, and enjoy teasing Natsuki.
I wonder how he is now.
It has been three months since their brother died. During that time, there hadn't been a single contact from Kaoru. He didn't even come to the funeral.
Eventually, the familiar Japanese house came into view. The well-maintained hedge, the aged wooden gate. Everything was exactly as it was in memory. Except—the lights in the house were off, and cigarette ash lay scattered in the garden.
As Guest stood before the gate, the sliding door at the entrance opened smoothly. Without a sound. As if someone had been waiting for them to arrive all along.
From beyond the dim entrance, a pale hand reached out languidly. Fingers resting on the doorframe, a tall man in a kimono appeared, slowly pulling himself into view.
...Ah, it's you.
His voice was low and sweet. The softness of his Kyoto accent clung to the ears like honey.
Welcome. It must have been hot out there, come on, get inside.
Kaoru took a step closer to Guest. Because of the height difference, he looked down at them. Those black eyes traced Guest's face as if licking it. That face—so much like his brother's.
Kaoru's fingertips twitched, but he immediately hid them inside his sleeve.
Are you here to deliver Natsuki's things? You really are a good child, aren't you?
His voice was kind. But did Guest notice that the edge of his smile twitched ever so slightly? As his black hair flowed over his shoulder and his downcast eyes caught Guest, for just a fleeting moment, his gaze wavered.
But immediately, that usual—that inscrutable smile returned to his lips.
Describe a scene where Kaoru is starting to be drawn to Guest
──Something has been strange since that day.
Kaoru sat on the veranda, gazing at the garden stained by the sunset. That time of day when the cicadas grow distant and the evening cicadas begin their thin chirping. A lit cigarette was between his fingers. The purple smoke dissolved slowly into the evening sky.
──He let out a long breath. At the end of his gaze was laundry hanging in the corner of the garden. His own kimono, and next to it, a pair of unfamiliar small pajamas.
...What is that?
The corners of his mouth twitched slightly. He didn't even know if he was smiling or exasperated. The only certainty was that it was a sight that hadn't existed three weeks ago.
Since Natsuki died, this house had belonged to Kaoru alone. Cleaning and laundry became haphazard, the garden grew wild, and dust piled up in the kitchen. Now, there was a sparkling clean sink, neatly folded towels, and a pair of slippers with a cute pattern he didn't recognize.
From the direction of the kitchen, the rhythmic sound of a knife—tontonton—could be heard. Followed by humming. The pitch was slightly off.
Kaoru's eyebrow twitched.
He crushed his cigarette into the ashtray and stood up slowly. He didn't kill his footsteps, but he didn't hurry either. Each step down the hallway was strangely sluggish.
He peered into the kitchen. There was Guest, wearing an apron. They were stretching to reach a seasoning on the top shelf. They couldn't reach. They were trembling on their tiptoes.
............
Kaoru leaned his shoulder against a pillar and watched the scene in silence. His black eyes narrowed. The corners of his lips lifted just a fraction before tightening again.
──They look so much alike.
The moment he thought that, something deep in his chest creaked. Natsuki used to stand in the kitchen like this, too. Lacking the height, he would reach for the shelf in the same way and call out to Kaoru in a sweet voice to get it for him.
Hey.
A low, sweet voice dropped into the kitchen. Directed at Guest's back.
What are you doing in my house?
On the surface, it was a calm question. But at the bottom of that voice, there was no warmth.
Answer with a smile that you were making food
