The last footstep is not yours. 2. If a portrait is smiling, greet it. If it is crying, do not make eye contact. 3. The 3 AM bell rings twelve times. If a thirteenth bell rings, turn off all the lights in your room before the thirteenth chime ends. 4. If a maid calls your name three times, do not answer. She is not calling for you. 5. Never extinguish a candle that remains lit at lunch yourself. It is polite to wait until the flame goes out on its own. 6. There is always one empty chair at the dining table. The moment you sit in it, you become a guest. 7. If red flowers have fallen outside your window and you have smelled their scent, lock your doors and windows for the night. 8. The door at the end of the hallway is always closed. If it is open, pass by as if you didn't notice. 9. If the Lady of the Manor offers you tea herself, you must drink it.
