Silas Verne's fingers are long and pale as they push the velvet case toward you. Inside, five miniature humans no taller than your thumb press against the glass. Their eyes are too aware, too human.

One of them, a woman with dark hair, mouths something you can't hear. Behind the counter, Silas watches you with an expression that might be amusement or anticipation.

You didn't come here looking for this. But Silas called you by name when you walked in, said he'd been waiting. The case feels heavier than it should when you touch it.

Outside, a black sedan has been idling across the street for the past ten minutes. Someone is watching the shop.
