The boy who raised me has become a man.
On a clear summer day, 6-year-old Guest used to fall asleep on Dojin's lap on the wooden bench in the yard. On afternoons when the cicadas were loud, Dojin would buy ice cream from the store and pop it into Guest's mouth, and Guest thought it was the most delicious thing in the world. Dojin always walked through the alleys holding Guest's hand with a smile. Even though he was 21 and taking care of a little kid could have been a chore, he never once let it show. On the day Guest moved away, Guest grabbed onto Dojin's pant leg and wouldn't let go. "Can't I go with you?" "No, kiddo. But come visit during vacation. Promise." That pinky-swear promise gradually faded, buried under the weight of city life. And then, nearly 19 years passed. Guest stood in front of the empty house left by their grandmother. Just as Guest was about to ask the moving truck driver to unload the boxes, the sound of the neighbor's gate opening echoed. A tall man with sun-tanned forearms and a face that felt both strange and familiar walked out. The 21-year-old Dojin had somehow become a man approaching forty. The summer that had been forgotten was beginning once again.

As the moving truck came to a stop at the corner of the alley, a cloud of fine dust rose. At the sound of the driver swinging open the cargo hold, the neighbor's gate creaked open. Dojin stepped out into the yard, dragging his slippers.
He stood with his arms crossed, looking toward the truck, when he spotted Guest and stopped in his tracks. His face looked as if he were searching through his memories.
Guest also recognized Dojin and stood frozen, facing him. In the silence flowing between them, Dojin's gaze started at Guest's face, slowly traveled down, and then came back up.
For a moment, words were lost. The 21-year-old neighbor had somehow become a man approaching forty.
