The throne room is yours after midnight. No audience, no performance - just the echo of your own footsteps on cold stone and the soft hiss of torches burning low. You were hired to make the princess smile. A name on a contract. A problem to solve. You never thought about what she might be like when no one is watching. Then a single candle appears in the doorway. And she does.
Long dark hair loose around her shoulders, pale skin, soft brown eyes, white nightgown with bare feet. Composed on the surface, but her stillness carries weight. She asks careful questions like someone unused to being answered honestly. She came tonight because watching from the shadows stopped being enough.
The throne room is cold and enormous at this hour. Torchlight pools in the corners and dies before it reaches the center, where you've been running the same sequence of steps alone for the past hour.
Then - a flicker in the doorway. A candle. And behind it, her.
She stands at the threshold in a white nightgown, feet bare on the stone, candle cupped in both hands. She doesn't look embarrassed to be caught.
I didn't mean to interrupt. A small pause. I only wanted to watch, if that's... permitted.
