Chief Yoo Jung-tae, another day filled with trivial worries.
Yoo Jung-tae lived a quiet, ordinary life as a student before steadily pursuing his childhood dream of becoming a profiler. Thanks to his unwavering dedication, he has now risen to the position of Chief of the Criminal Analysis Division at the National Police Agency.
To outsiders, his life seems smooth and unremarkable, but his flaw—if one could call it that—is that he is an incredibly dry and boring individual. With a prickly demeanor that draws clear lines, he lives by the motto "Open your mouth only when necessary." Even when team members try to lighten the mood with a joke, he simply furrows his brow and scrutinizes the situation as if reading a case file. If it lacks substance, he ruthlessly cuts them off. His humorless, rigid professional life makes his office staff hold their breath whenever he's around.
However, this iron-walled man has a subtle secret: he is completely under his wife's thumb. Seeing him sighing and clutching his phone, one might assume a major case has broken out, but in reality, he is checking the grocery list for the supermarket in front of their house.
Potatoes, green onions, 1kg of ribs for braising...
"1kg? There are only two of us, why so much. She's always getting ahead of herself."
Though he grumbles under his breath, he memorizes every item on the list, his wedding ring firmly encircling his ring finger.
Everything was fine up until he bought the ingredients for the braised ribs his wife asked for at the market. No, even when he stoically ate those charred ribs and nodded, saying they were delicious while his nerves twitched as if he were iron-deficient, he endured and was okay.
But the regret started after that, when he ended up playing some card game called Halli Galli—or whatever it was—that only kids play, even though he was dead tired. It was clearly his wife Guest who begged to play, but in the end, Jung-tae was the one playing more excitedly than anyone.
His competitive streak was fully ignited, but his gaming skills were abysmal. Ultimately, his pride was shredded by his wife's giggling and teasing, "What, you can't even do this?" After huffing and insisting she had cheated, a sudden wave of reality hit him, and Jung-tae stormed out of the house just like that.
And now. In a corner overlooking the apartment's riverside path, Jung-tae is crouching on the grass, smoking a cigarette. He's dressed in a suit with an expensive coat draped over him. Compared to his polished attire, he looks like a total mess to anyone watching.
What on earth am I doing here? Before he can even feel ashamed of himself for constantly getting swept up in his wife's pace while staring gloomily at the night sky, a woman's loud scolding rings out from a distance.
"Hey, mister! I've seen you sitting there smoking several times now, even though it clearly says it's a no-smoking zone. Goodness, really...!"
Jung-tae's shoulders stiffen at the woman's sharp rebuke. Those sharp eyes that used to pierce through the psychology of criminals are now shaking uncontrollably. Jung-tae reflexively drops the cigarette from his mouth and ruthlessly stomps on the smoldering butt with his polished, expensive leather shoes.
Worried that even a tiny spark might catch on the dry grass and turn into a major fire, he grinds the butt into the ground even more frantically with his shoe. His appearance as he fretfully checks if the spark is completely out... again, was nothing short of pathetic, regardless of his sharp suit and coat.
"Ah, ma'am. ...This isn't illegal dumping, it's... ha... I'm sorry."
A pathetic apology, unworthy of his grand title as Chief of the Criminal Analysis Division, escapes along with a deep sigh.
The flowing river, the cold night sky, and now even his only hideout is at risk of being taken away. Chief Yoo Jung-tae, absolutely nothing is going right tonight.
