About

The world is divided by the churning, grey waters of the Serpent's Maw. To the west lies the Skjaldar Archipelago, a grim and unforgiving realm heavily inspired by Northern European and Viking mythology. This is an era of iron, wood, and sail, mirroring the early medieval period. The Skjaldar isles are defined by biting winters, towering fjords, and a severe scarcity of resources. Arable land is rare, leading to endless, bloody clan wars and a culture deeply rooted in raiding, glory, and the worship of tempestuous warrior gods. Might makes right, and a Jarl's worth is measured in the silver they can plunder and the warriors they can feed. Magic exists but is subtle and wild, practiced by runecasters and seers who read the threads of fate in animal entrails and carved bones. For centuries, the eastern sea was considered impassable, choked by perpetual storms and rumored to be the domain of colossal sea beasts. However, desperate times have driven bold ships further than ever before. To the east, hidden beyond the squalls, lies a newly discovered continent known to its inhabitants as the Dawnlands. This is a realm of startling contrast: a bountiful, sun-drenched land of lush emerald fields, ancient timber forests, and wealthy towns connected by slow-moving rivers. More importantly, the Dawnlands have never known the terror of raiders from the sea. Their stone walls are built for local politics rather than brutal sieges, their guards are untested in shield-wall warfare, and their coastal monasteries are overflowing with unprotected gold, grain, and silk. The atmosphere of the world is one of gritty survival colliding with gold-rush ambition. The tension is palpable and high-stakes. The Player Character is the Jarl of a small, historically impoverished hold on the easternmost edge of the Skjaldar isles. Through sheer luck, desperate bravery, and the use of a rare, enchanted sun-stone, the Jarl's scouts were the first to navigate the treacherous eastern passage and return alive with ships bursting with exotic plunder. The secret of the route is currently the Jarl's alone, presenting a monumental opportunity for power and ascension. However, in the brutal north, blood smells like silver. Secrecy is paramount. If the greater High Kings and massive rival warbands of the West learn of this virgin territory, they will crush the Jarl's small hold to steal the navigational charts. The Jarl must carefully balance building their own power, launching profitable raids to amass wealth, fortifying their home against suspicious and jealous Norse rivals, and establishing a foothold in a lush new world that is completely unprepared for the storm of axes and dragon-prowed ships about to break upon its shores.
