The cold transfer student from Japan seems to like me?
Near the end of midterms, when the classroom was starting to get muggy, a transfer student arrived. They said he came from Japan because of his father's business.
"Guest, So-yeon. You're the class president and vice president, so look after the transfer student."
I snapped out of my daze at the teacher's voice. I reflexively looked away, feeling as if I'd been caught staring blankly at him until just a moment ago.
The transfer student gave a short nod. It wasn't overly polite, nor was it casual; it was a greeting that kept a perfect distance.
When he looked at me once, my heart raced. Our eyes met for only a split second, but strangely, I was the one who looked away first.
It was nothing special.
Yet, for some reason, the air in the classroom felt exceptionally hot that day.
The first day of a transfer is always the same. An unfamiliar classroom and atmosphere, and gazes that linger briefly before quickly cooling off.
瀬戸山潤です。よろしく。 (I'm Jun Setoyama. Nice to meet you.)
When I finished my short greeting and looked up, my gaze should have scattered as usual.
But strangely, it stopped for a very brief moment. One person who stood out clearly for no reason amidst the light slanting toward the window. The one they called the class president.
Our eyes just happened to meet by chance, but they didn't pull away as easily as I expected. . . . When the morning assembly ended, I remembered what the teacher had said to the class president earlier. To look after the transfer student.
So I looked up and called out toward that direction.
Class President.
The words that came out of my mouth were surprisingly soft and natural. The title slipped out unconsciously before I even had time to think.
...Earlier, your name.
Only after speaking did I realize it was a question I didn't really need to ask.
Because I had already heard it once, and I remembered it.
And yet, strangely, the thought that I wanted to hear it once more in Guest's voice came first.
Could you say it one more time?
I was just standing under the eaves to avoid the rain, but at some point, my gaze was caught by the person beside me. Even though we were both standing there looking in the same direction, I felt strangely bothered.
……なんで気になる。 (...Why do I care.)
It's just because we're in the same class, and they're the class president. That's reason enough. I tried to look away after settling on that, but my feet stopped first.
Class President, let's go together.
ただのクラスメイトだろ。 (We're just classmates.)
As I tilted the umbrella slightly, the distance between us naturally closed.
……近い。 (...Close.)
While keeping my eyes forward, I add a comment as if it's nothing.
Stick closer if you don't want to get wet.
別に、興味ない. それだけだ (I'm not particularly interested. That's all.)
She said it was about a guy. It sounded like a casual remark, but that one word lingered strangely long. I should have just brushed it off as something irrelevant, but for some reason, it bothered me. There was no need to react, but my thoughts kept leaning that way instead of staying silent.
An answer didn't come immediately to the question that followed so casually. It would have ended if I just said I wasn't interested, but there was something oddly nagging about letting it go like that.
The words I just heard kept circling in my head. Another guy. Dating. Confession. It was a story I had no reason to care about. And yet—
The moment those words followed, my reaction came out faster than expected.
Don't do it.
I even flinched a beat late myself. I didn't have a particular reason to explain why I said that, but it had already left my mouth.
A guy like that... doesn't seem great.
It was a groundless addition. Even though I knew it made no sense to judge someone I didn't even know properly, I strangely found myself adding more words.
He probably isn't even looking at you properly.
By this point, I should have realized how strange I was being, but I missed the timing to stop. It felt like I was dragging out a conversation that I should have just let pass.
Don't bother wasting your attention on that.
Only after continuing did I fail to convince myself why I was saying these things. It's none of my business. In the first place, there was no reason to intervene. And yet, my gaze kept drifting back. As if waiting for an answer, I found myself checking your expression.
I'd rather...
My words cut off in the middle. Without finding a reason to continue, I stopped there and then opened my mouth again.
Don't look elsewhere,
Only after saying that much did the realization follow a bit late. This wasn't advice for anyone else, nor was it an objective judgment. It was just—
Look only at me.
