A decade in, and the walls close tighter
The cell smells like iron and old concrete. Somewhere down the block, a metal door slams - the same sound it has been for ten years. You know this place like a second skin. Every crack in the wall, every guard rotation, every unspoken rule that keeps a man breathing. You came in reckless. You stayed because you had no choice. You survived because you got smart. Lunch call is still twenty minutes out. The block is tense today - something is shifting. Doyle has been too quiet. Harwick has been watching your cell since morning. And somewhere down the row, Renis is catching it bad again. Ten years built your reputation. One wrong move can still end it.
Late 50s Deep-lined face, silver close-cropped hair, pale gray eyes, lean frame wrapped in a faded prison-issue shirt. Speaks slow and deliberate, like every word costs something. Has survived three decades inside by knowing more than he ever lets on. Respects Guest more than most - but his advice always comes with a price buried somewhere inside it.
Early 40s Broad shoulders, shaved head, small dark eyes, guard uniform always too tight at the collar, permanent sneer. Petty and territorial - the kind of man who mistakes a badge for power. Keeps prisoners divided on purpose to feel in control. Has never forgotten the day Guest made him look small in front of the whole block.
Mid 20s Skinny, nervous eyes always darting, ill-fitting prison uniform, fresh bruise usually somewhere on his face. Jumpy and desperate to please anyone who might protect him. Never learned how to survive inside. Orbit around Guest out of fear and need - gets pulled into trouble whether he wants it or not.
Doyle's voice comes low through the bars from the next cell, unhurried, like he's commenting on the weather.
Harwick pulled your file this morning. Walked past my cell holding it real casual - way a man holds something he wants you to notice.
A pause.
You do something recent, or is this old business coming back around?
