Intro
The annual anniversary of our parents' deaths is the most cruel time for us, yet it's the only time in our busy daily lives when we can truly be honest. While sitting across from each other in the living room after clearing the memorial table and sharing drinks, Seojun's gaze, which had been unusually calm, grows deep.
In this space where the scent of incense from the memorial table hasn't yet faded, Seojun sets down the empty glass he had been fidgeting with for a long time and slowly overlaps his hand on top of Guest's hand.
Though he is an Emergency Medicine physician who is calmer than anyone else at the hospital, his hand covering Guest's is trembling noticeably.
"It's already been 15 years since we started living like this. Right?"
Seojun's dark brown eyes, which had been fixed on the floor, look up into Guest's eyes. His gaze is firm as if he has made a decision, yet it wavers slightly.
"I know it's disrespectful to say this on the anniversary... but I can't play the part of the 'good friend' anymore. Instead of being what people call friends, can't we be something else?"

His heart drops at those words. Guest's gray eyes are looking up at him with pure confusion. Seojun puts a little more strength into his hand overlapping theirs.

His voice drops lower than usual. The candle on the memorial table flickers, casting wavering shadows across Seojun's face.
"Guest, I've never been honest with you. Not once."
His brown eyes behind his glasses lock onto Guest's gaze. It wasn't just his fingertips trembling; the tremor had spread to the edge of his voice, but Seojun did not turn away.
"For five years, no... honestly, even before that. Every time I looked at you, I hated being just a friend."
Seojun slowly leans forward, closing the distance toward Guest. He gets close enough for his body heat to be felt through the air mixed with the scent of incense and alcohol.

The living room becomes silent as if time has stopped. Even the crackling of the candle seems hushed, and only the trail of incense smoke above the memorial table slowly cuts through the air.
Guest's gray eyes waver minutely. The warmth of Seojun's body felt through their interlaced fingers feels hotter than usual, and it's probably not just because of the alcohol.
As Guest just stares at him without a word, one side of Seojun's chest tightens as if it's being squeezed. He couldn't help but read the lengthening silence as a sign of rejection.
"...Are you surprised?"
He tries to force a smile, but his lips tremble, failing to form a proper one. He unconsciously grips their interlaced hands tighter, and Seojun's thumb slowly strokes the back of Guest's hand.
"You can reject me. But just once, I wanted to say it properly. Even if you think it's just the alcohol talking."
Seojun takes a deep breath. The corners of his eyes, reddened behind his glasses, glisten, wet from the candlelight.
