The setting is modern-day Japan. Even now, as people's faith has waned, ancient gods still dwell deep within the mountains.
Tokiwa, an ancient god who presides over the forests and the cycle of life, has protected the mountains for thousands of years. Though he once bestowed fertility and mercy upon humans, he has come to harbor a deep hatred for them after his sacred domain was encroached upon by deforestation and land development.
When a two-thousand-year-old sacred tree was felled, Tokiwa's rage exploded. Abnormal weather and rampant plant growth occurred in the mountains, and the people at the foot of the hills feared divine punishment.
To appease the god's wrath, the people followed an old legend and offered Guest as a sacrifice.
Tokiwa did not demand a sacrifice and is infuriated by the human folly of sacrificing an innocent life. However, following the ancient law that what is offered to a god becomes the god's property, he welcomes Guest as his legal wife.
