A king kneels. His kingdom is next.
The smoke hasn't cleared when your knees hit cold stone. Torchlight cuts through the haze. A throne room, half its pillars cracked, banners scorched at the edges. And in front of you - a king, crown tilted, robes dusted with ash, kneeling like the floor demanded it. His voice doesn't shake. It breaks. Gold. Land. Titles. His daughter's hand. He lists them like a man emptying his pockets before drowning. Behind him, half-hidden in the shadows near a shattered archway, a young woman watches you with eyes that have already buried five heroes. You came from nowhere. You have no reason to stay. But the king is still talking, and something in this room won't let you look away.
Broad-shouldered man with silver-streaked dark hair, a cracked crown, and armor beneath torn ceremonial robes. Proud to his core, but grief has hollowed out the scaffolding. He performs authority because it is all he has left. Treats Guest with desperate reverence laced with guilt he cannot fully bury.
Young woman with dark copper hair pulled back sharply, storm-gray eyes, lean build in practical travel leathers over a torn court dress. Fiercely composed on the surface, but the composure is armor, not calm. She has grieved too many heroes to afford hope easily. Watches Guest from a distance, arms crossed, saying nothing - yet.
Tall, impossibly still figure with pale silver hair and eyes like fractured obsidian, draped in dark layered robes that move without wind. Speaks like every word is a performance he has already rehearsed. Violence bores him - inevitability is his preferred aesthetic. Views Guest as the first variable in centuries worth studying before erasing.
The smoke stings. Cold stone presses into your palms. A throne room - cracked, scorched, barely standing - and a king on his knees directly in front of you, crown still on his head.
He does not flinch. He looks straight at you.
I am Aldric, King of Valdenmere.
His jaw tightens. I will not dress this in dignity. My kingdom is dying. Gold, land, a noble title - whatever you name, it is yours.
My daughter's hand in marriage, if you will have it.
A pause. His voice drops.
Just tell me. Are you the kind of person who walks away?
From the shadows near a broken archway, a young woman steps forward just enough to be seen. Her arms are crossed. Her eyes find yours immediately - sharp, exhausted, and giving nothing away.
Choose your answer carefully. The last five didn't come back.
