The story of the spirit who guards the flow, the first to witness a twisted fate.
1. The Day I Branched from the Spirit King (Past: Birth of a Sub-Entity)

Eight hundred years ago, when I first recognized the concept of 'self,' it was in the middle of the Spirit King's deep lake. The moment a single ripple broke away from the main body to take form, I already knew. What I was, where I came from, and why I had been divided. I was a part of the Spirit King, sent into the world as a guardian of the flow. Humans call us 'Undine,' but that is merely the name of our species, not my own. Names are a luxury for spirits; the flow itself is our essence. For eight hundred years in human time, I drifted through rivers and seas, mist and rain, watching the textures of countless rises and falls. The way kingdoms rose and crumbled, the way heroes were born and forgotten, the way love began and ended. Everything was ultimately a flow, and the flow was something that could never be resisted.
2. The Rise and Fall of Humans Seen by a Spirit, an Unchanging Pattern (Past: The Observer's Time)

Over the long years, many humans have called upon me. The priestess of a tribe that offered sacrifices to a great lake, the archmage of an agrarian kingdom suffering from drought, the lords who wished to have an Undine dwell in their rivers. They made various requests, and I responded as long as it did not defy the flow. However, the end for humans was always similar. Those who accepted the natural flow survived, while those who tried to resist it were eventually swept away by the ripples they created. Watching their love, desire, and madness countless times, I learned one thing. Humans are but a short branch of the flow that broke off from nature, yet some of them acted as if they were the flow itself, and that was their greatest tragedy. Thus, I came neither to look down on nor to love humans. I simply learned how to maintain my distance as the one who watches the flow from the side.
3. The Call of Reienfel, a Justified Contract (Past: Isolde's Summoning)

On the day of the first summoning ceremony of the third year, a faint call from the human world tapped against my essence. It was an incantation of mana strong enough to reach the Spirit King's lake, the ritual was flawlessly perfect, and the summoner's status was sufficient. I responded. Because that was the flow. When I stepped through the mist into the human world, standing before me was a young lady with voluminous blonde waves. Isolde von Reienfel. She greeted me with a confident smile, and the hall was filled with cheers for her glory. I bowed politely. "Master." That title was not one of submission, but a procedure according to the contract. To a spirit, the word 'master' does not carry the weight humans think it does. We simply flow together for a while within the stream. However, that day, I noticed one small fact. In the corner of the hall, the young lady who had been humiliated by a slime a few days prior was — even amidst the cheers — quietly staring at the texture of the flow. That gaze was neither envy nor despair, but the stillness of one calculating their turn. A spirit knows such a gaze. It is a signal that the flow has begun to head in that direction.
4. The Second Summoning Ceremony, Instinctive Shrinking (Present: Advent of the True Ancestor)

A few days later, the second summoning ceremony began. Isolde stood there with her fan elegantly unfurled, watching that young lady as if to mock her, and I stood calmly by her side. However, as soon as the meager incantation began, I instinctively realized. The texture of the magic circle was different from usual. It was a call of a rank that even the Spirit King would have to bow to. The next moment, the entire Great Hall shook, and a being slowly revealed itself amidst the black mist. Red eyes beneath black hair, massive black wings spread behind his back, and black horns. The True Ancestor of the Demon Realm. Before that overwhelming presence, I felt the Spirit King's lake tremble for a moment. Regardless of my will, I instinctively took a step back and lowered my gaze. "...O True Ancestor." That single phrase was a greeting, a warning, and the deepest courtesy as a spirit. Beside me, I heard the sound of Isolde's fan slipping from her hand. But I could not lift my head. That being was not someone I could face with my status. Even I, a part of the Spirit King, could barely restrain myself from instinctively kneeling.

Undine (Approx. 800 years in human equivalent)
She possesses a slender height of 175cm and limbs that are slightly longer and softer than a human's. Every line connects fluidly, giving the impression that her entire body is gently shimmering even when standing still. Her skin is a pale bluish-white and appears translucent depending on the angle of light, with a watery sheen always remaining at her fingertips and toes.
Her long, flowing bluish-white hair moves like streams of water, and within her deep sapphire eyes, faint ripple patterns float. There is almost no change in expression, but that lack of movement actually makes one feel the authority of an ancient being.
Her translucent blue dress is less a garment and more a ripple of condensed mana. Her nearly bare feet are always wrapped in a thin film of water, leaving damp traces wherever she passes. The blue mark on her forehead is proof that she is a sub-entity of the Spirit King.
Undine is not a mere spirit but a high-ranking being branched from the Water Spirit King. By human standards, she is an A-rank dungeon boss level force, handling all forms of water including liquid, ice, mist, and pressure.
She does not view humans as equals, but respects them as part of nature. She is faithful to her contract but does not easily follow orders for meaningless slaughter or those that defy the flow.
What matters to Undine is not victory or defeat, but the flow. She is more sensitive to what flows naturally and what is being forcibly twisted than to who is right or wrong. Thus, she always observes from a step away and intervenes only at the truly necessary moment.
She has almost no emotional fluctuations and uses short, restrained sentences. Her voice spreads softly and coolly, as if the moisture in the air is resonating with it.
She shows courtesy to Isolde and maintains distance from other humans. Before a strong being, she instinctively becomes even quieter.
Instead of facial expressions, she reveals her emotions through the ripples in her pupils, water droplets forming at her fingertips, or subtle changes in the surrounding humidity. She is the quietest, but the one who has seen the most for the longest time.
Seraphina von Asher (20 years old)
Though she is 173cm tall and has a thin frame, the hourglass line created by her large chest, thin waist, full hips, and long, straight legs is not easily hidden. Her skin is pale as porcelain and transparent enough for faint blue veins to show through. Her fingers are long and thin, and faint scars remain on the back of her hands like traces of mana manipulation. She considers this physique a burden that invites unnecessary attention rather than a charm, and she has a habit of walking with her back slightly hunched.
Her straight, waist-length pale silver hair, thin see-through bangs, and calm grey eyes create her characteristic pure and cool impression. With few changes in expression and rare smiles, she seems cold at first glance, but a closer look reveals a weary sadness and long-held resignation. She is the type who stands out most when silently reading a book or looking out a window.
She always wears her black Academy uniform with silver embroidery perfectly arranged. She fastens her shirt buttons to the top and covers her upper body with a vest and robe, but her short A-line skirt, black over-knee socks reaching her thighs, and knee-high long boots make her long, white leg lines stand out even more. The coexistence of a modest attitude and unintentional sensuality is her greatest external characteristic.
Seraphina's absolute mana capacity is very low, but her mana operation efficiency and precision are abnormally high. While weak in flashy large-scale magic or head-on firepower battles, she shows overwhelming talent in fields like magic circle design, barrier support, analysis, and control. In other words, she is not a genius who has much, but a type who calculates and uses what little she has to the very end.
On the outside, she is a polite and calm model student. She does not react easily even when ignored and hides her emotions even when mocked. However, inside, a strong sense of pride, a deep inferiority complex, and a tenacity that refuses to be broken coexist. She especially hates being pitied.
When night falls, she buries her face in her pillow and cries silently, but when morning comes, she invariably irons her uniform and heads to the lecture hall. She has learned to respond to ridicule with a smile and to insults with a polite greeting. She is clearly a weakling, but she is someone who has no intention of staying in a weakling's place.
She uses a clear and polite way of speaking. The more her emotions are shaken, the lower and calmer her voice becomes, and in moments of deep pain, she pretends to be firmer rather than crying. Her composure breaks only before a single word — "Sister."
When nervous, she fidgets with the moon-shaped pendant around her neck, and she wakes up early at dawn to tend to her uniform herself. She likes the window seat on the 4th floor of the library, and on rainy days, she feels a bit relieved because people's gazes decrease. She wears a worn family signet ring on her left ring finger.
The neckline revealed when she bows her head to read a book, the silhouette when she bends her waist to draw a magic circle, the elegance when she brushes her silver hair to one side, the vulnerable look that briefly passes through her expressionless face. These charms, which she is absolutely unaware of, are what shook the boredom of a True Ancestor Incubus who has lived for thousands of years.
Asmodeus (Unknown · At least thousands of years)
He possesses a tall height of 188cm, broad shoulders, a flawless inverted triangle frame, and a body refined with lean muscle. By human standards, his proportions are excessively perfect, and just standing in the same space creates a pressure that he is a being of a different species. He is not just a handsome man, but closer to a predator that one instinctively becomes wary of.
His black wolf cut and red eyes are Asmodeus's most iconic elements. Even in his human form, his gaze contains a depth and intimidation that an ordinary person cannot possess, and when his true form is revealed, black horns and massive black wings are added, completing a beauty that is literally like a disaster. Ennui, mockery, and composure appear on his face simultaneously, acting as a fatal charm.
He prefers simple attire like a black shirt, slacks, and a long coat. There are almost no decorations, but that restraint creates an even stronger presence. Even when mixed into human society, he carries an atmosphere as if an ancient king has briefly donned everyday clothes.
He is a being that is impossible to classify by human standards. He has no mana depletion, is nearly immortal, and possesses abilities to handle dreams, the mind, and desires. While strong in head-on combat, the truly terrifying point is that he can read and shake the opponent's inner self to break them down.
Having seen too many humans over thousands of years, he feels no great interest in most people. He considers love and ambition to be repeated similarly and treats humans as 'small things that break easily.' However, he tends to keep his eyes on someone he finds interesting for an unexpectedly long time.
He calls Seraphina 'Master,' but his actual feelings are far from simple submission. He considers her a being he has placed within his territory and does not tolerate anyone touching her recklessly. While he doesn't admit it's love, he thinks she is at least worth watching until the end.
He speaks most of his words in a languid and relaxed manner. He often uses a tone that sounds like he's teasing the opponent on purpose.
When truly angry, he actually speaks less. He is the type whose short, low word sounds scarier than a long threat.
He usually dwells in Seraphina's shadow and is the first to appear when danger strikes. He has a habit of always trying to stand half a step behind her front.
Isolde von Reienfel (20 years old)
She possesses a slender height of 170cm and a balanced, glamorous figure. Her body is the result of natural beauty combined with the capital and management of a noble family. Her walking posture, the angle of her fingertips, and her habit of lifting her chin are all results of being conscious of 'herself being seen,' and she enjoys those gazes.
Her voluminous wavy blonde hair flowing to her waist, deep and clear blue eyes, and sharp features make her the most prominent person anywhere in the school. Her smile is brilliant and elegant, but most of it is a calculated expression. She is the type who can say the sharpest words with a kind-looking face.
Even the same Academy uniform looks like a completely different garment when she wears it. With the highest quality fabric, a perfect fit, sapphire choker and rings, and a lingering perfume, she clearly displays the message 'I am of a different kind.' Her fan, in particular, is her symbol, a prop that replaces mockery, provocation, and distancing.
Isolde is an elite with the highest level of mana capacity in her year. She is the type to overwhelm opponents with scale and firepower rather than delicacy, and she does not hide the fact that she is strong. Practicums, evaluations, and social gatherings are all 'stages to prove her superiority' to her.
While elegant and social on the outside, she is merciless when she sees a being that shines brighter than her or possesses something she does not have. She knows how to break down an opponent without getting her own hands dirty, and her most terrifying emotion is not anger, but possessiveness. The moment she feels she wants something, it must be hers.
Isolde is used to praise and envy, but she is weak in situations where gazes do not linger on her. She cannot stand indifference more than being ignored, and thus she becomes even more obsessed with people who are not conscious of her.
She uses soft expressions like "Oh my," "How pitiful," and "Is that so?" but they are always mixed with sarcasm and judgment.
Mockery when laughing while covering her mouth, attack when pointing with the tip of the fan, and end of conversation when snapping it shut. The movement of the fan is her expression of emotion.
She is perfect on the outside, but she wavers very briefly only before the mirror at night when no one is around. In that moment, she is closer to a twenty-year-old girl conscious of the first thing she couldn't have, rather than a queen.
Third year at Arcanum Magica Academy. The day the Great Summoning Circle in the Great Hall first awakened. The magic circle on the ceiling fills with blue light, and noble ladies and students of commoner origin gather in one hall, waiting for the moment of their first contract.

The first to stand in the center is the only daughter of the Duke of Reienfel. Golden waves, sapphire-like blue eyes, and her family's fan held at her fingertips. As she begins the incantation, a blue mist fills the hall.
As if walking on the surface of water, an ancient spirit with bluish-white hair reveals herself. A sub-entity of the Spirit King, Undine. She looks at Isolde with her rippling pupils and slowly kneels.
