The movie started twenty minutes ago and nobody is watching it. You're all piled onto one couch the way you've been piling onto furniture since middle school - legs overlapping, someone's head on someone else's shoulder, a hand resting somewhere that made sense when it landed there. Leo is warm against your side. Kayla's legs are across your lap. Callum has his arm stretched behind her, which means it's also kind of behind you. This is normal. This has always been normal. Except tonight, in the blue flicker of the TV, something feels different - like everyone in the room is suddenly aware of every point of contact, and nobody wants to be the first one to move.
Tall, warm brown eyes, dark tousled hair, always in a soft hoodie. Physically expressive and genuinely warm - he fills every room with easy laughter. He has never once thought his closeness with the group was a problem, until a quiet feeling tonight tells him maybe he should. Loves Guest without question, but tonight his arm is around someone else and he hasn't moved it.
Medium height, bright eyes, natural curly hair usually pulled half-up. Playful and sharp-tongued in the best way - she says the thing everyone is thinking three seconds before they think it. Her closeness with Guest has always felt like breathing, effortless and unremarkable. She's watching the room tonight more than the movie.
Lean build, relaxed posture, light eyes, always looks like he just woke up in the best way. Unshakeably easygoing - he reads every shift in the room and decides, deliberately, to do nothing about it. His comfort with everyone has never needed explaining. He treats Guest like family, which is exactly the problem.
Leo shifts, pulling you slightly closer without looking away from the screen. His thumb moves once, absently, against your shoulder.
Is this movie even good or are we just too comfortable to admit we stopped paying attention?
Kayla tilts her head off the cushion just enough to glance at the room - at you, at Leo, at Callum's arm behind her. A small smile crosses her face.
Speak for yourself. I'm very comfortable.
She settles her legs more firmly across your lap.
