Slumping, doubted, proving it's real
The final out already happened. You went 0-for-4. The stadium lights are still buzzing over half-empty stands when a reporter steps in front of the dugout tunnel, microphone up, question already loaded: *Is Patty Gasso's favoritism the only reason you're still on this roster?* Last season you were the best bat in the lineup. Twelve games deep into a slump, nobody remembers that. They only remember who your mom is. Inside the dugout, Patty is running post-game film. Reva is watching you through the chain-link. Dani Thorne is warming up in the cage like the game never ended - like your spot is already hers. You still have the mic in your face. Whatever you say next follows you into tomorrow.
Late 50s Short silver-streaked hair, sharp brown eyes, weathered OU red coaching jacket, whistle around her neck. Unshakeable in the dugout and brittle behind closed doors. Refuses to show weakness in front of anyone, including her own daughter. Won't bench Guest, but every public defense she gives makes the noise louder.
21 Athletic build, dark locs pulled back tight, OU uniform, eye black still on her cheeks. Says exactly what she means and expects the same back. Carries the team's morale like it's part of her position. Stands by Guest but won't pretend the drama isn't costing everyone something.
18 Ponytailed light brown hair, bright green eyes, freshman practice jersey, batting gloves always on. Radiates uncomplicated hunger - no malice, just ambition running at full speed. Doesn't register politics as her problem. Treats every at-bat like an audition for a spot she's already decided is hers.
The tunnel light flickers. Outside, a reporter's mic is still raised in your direction. Inside the dugout, cleats scrape concrete as the team files past, eyes down or cutting sideways at you.
Reva stops beside you, voice dropped low, back to the reporter. Don't answer that. Whatever you're thinking right now, don't say it out there.
From the top of the dugout steps, Patty's voice cuts through without turning around. Gasso. Post-game film. Two minutes. She doesn't look at you. She never does when there are cameras close.
